Genetic Counselor

Exciting opportunity for a board certified/board eligible Genetic Counselor to join the Hussman Institute for Human Genomics (HIHG), University of Miami Miller School Of Medicine. The HIHG aims to discover the genetic influences on human health and apply this knowledge to the practice of medicine through improved diagnostics, treatments, and medications.

Job responsibilities include:

    -- Clinical Responsibilities: Provide genetic education, counseling, and psychological support for those with birth defects, genetic disorders, positive newborn screening results, or who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions.

    -- HIHG Outreach: Facilitate recruitment and enrollment of participants from the population in South Florida by fostering community awareness and support.

    • Establish partnerships with community organizations
    • Identify areas of need by developing, coordinating, and participating in ongoing needs assessments of the community via focus groups, surveys, town hall forums, etc.
    • Develop educational materials
    • Provide ongoing community education pertaining to genetic research, diseases under investigation at the HIHG, and genetic topics of interest.
    • Update web content to reflect outreach and educational activities
    • Participate as a member of our Community Advisory Board

    Job Requirements: A Masters Degree in genetic counseling is required. Experience as a genetic counselor is desired, but new graduates will be considered. Ability to effectively communicate medical information, test results, diagnoses and/or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood by the client is required. In particular, experience or training in development of materials that can be used for community education is desirable. Experience and interest in research is also desirable. Candidates must be either board certified or board eligible, have excellent communication and writing skills, and be able to work independently and with a team, in a fast paced environment. Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications will be considered.

    Genetic Counselor

One of the five centers of the HIHG is the Center for Genomic Medicine (CGM). It is the locus for all translational work and also houses the HIHG Biorepository. One of the primary tasks of the CGM is to advance the use of genetics in mainstream medicine. Areas of emphasis include: 1) establishing a diagnostic research laboratory, 2) genetic risk assessment trials using family history, biomarkers, susceptibility genes, and combinations, 3) gene based therapeutics, such as stem cell, RNA silencing and vectors, and 4) developing and applying models for practical implementation of genomic medicine.

    Job responsibilities include:

    Senior Bioinformatics Scientist

    The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics, School of Medicine, University of Miami is seeking a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist. The successful candidate will work with research teams to extend capabilities in next generation data analysis and Bioinformatics to improve the understanding of genetic variation in human health and disease. Responsibilities include developing, maintaining and operating next generation data analysis to perform the following: image analysis, base calling, sequencing assembly, SNP verification and downstream annotation. The successful applicant will work on large-scale multidisciplinary research projects in collaboration with the Sequencing Core and Center for Genomics Technologies to enable translational research and development in Clinical Genomics.

    A Bachelor's degree and at least three years experience in Bioinformatics in large scale genome sequence analyses is required. Masters or PhD degree in Bioinformatics/ Computer Science/ Computational Biology preferred. Proven track record in providing solutions for laboratory-based experimentalists and demonstrable programming skills such as Java and/or C++/C required along with excellent scripting skills in PERL. The applicant must be proficient in using relational database management systems such as MySQL or Oracle. Experience with cluster computing, knowledge of resource management and job scheduling (eg PBS) desired. A working experience using next generation data analysis using two or more of the following platform technologies (Illumina GA, SOLID, 454) is required.

    Applicants should have a working knowledge of UNIX/Linux environments. Applicants must have the ability to work in a fast moving interdisciplinary team environment and the ability to discuss issues and provide solutions to scientists with different backgrounds. A working knowledge in some of the following areas is required: analysis of GWAS data; microarray gene expression; gene prioritization using SNP, gene and pathway analysis; developing material for Bioinformatics tutorials and training courses; micro-RNA target prediction; analysis of methylation in epigenomics projects. Working experience analyzing copy number variation using microarray technologies is a plus. Any appropriate combination of education, certifications and/or relevant work experience will be considered.

    Research Associate (Data Analyst in Genetic Epidemiology Core)

    Position Description:
    The Research Associate will interact with laboratory and clinical personnel in the generation and management of genetic data, while functioning as a member of a multidisciplinary research/study team under the direction of the Analytic Project Manager(s) and Project PI's. Responsibilities and duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Efficiently preparing data, conducting statistical analysis and summarizing results for large research projects.
  • Preparing written reports to document and to summarize analytic activities.
  • Participating in the development and testing of efficient protocols for the collection, verification, management and analysis of large amounts of genotypic and phenotypic data
Qualifications: Applicants should possess a bachelor's degree in an area relevant to data analysis and/or biological research with four years genetic data analysis experience or a Master's degree. Examples include statistics, mathematics, computer science, biology, psychology, or other majors with a quantitative emphasis.

Work experience, including an internship in a related field, is prerequisite. Additionally, applicants are expected to:
  • Work efficiently on both PC and Unix platforms.
  • Be familiar with data management and analysis software, including programs for human pedigree analysis, basic statistical software, and query-based extraction of clinical and laboratory data from a large relational database.
  • Adapt quickly to new software and analysis methods.
  • Familiarity with statistical software (SAS, S-plus, STATA) is desired, but not a requirement.

Research Associates

We are looking for qualified individuals to fill our requirements for Research Associates. The individual(s) will perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting physical, chemical, biological and other research laboratory tests and experiments to obtain data for research purposes.

Responsibility includes: Conferring with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments; make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular equipment as required.

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field plus two years of experience in various laboratory research techniques. An appropriate combination of relevant education, experience and/or certifications.
