Genetic Counselor

Under indirect supervision of the Clinical Director of the John T. Macdonald Foundation Department of Human Genetics, serves as a genetic counselor and research coordinator. Provides genetic education, counseling, and psychological support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders or who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions. Interprets information about genetic disorders, analyzes inheritance patterns, and reviews available options with the family. Coordinates and supports research activities within area of expertise. Creates and designs genetics-driven marketing materials for the Center for Medical Genetics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Genetic Counselor - 70%

  1. Follow-up of newborn screening. Interfaces diagnosis and rapid treatment with the University of Miami Metabolic Genetics Center. Continues long-term follow-up between center for metabolic disorders and primary care physicians.
  2. Assists with the development of proposals to integrate Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands with the Florida Department of Health's newborn screening program. Helps to provide diagnostic and therapeutic interventions through Miami GeneCure Diagnostic Laboratories and Metabolic Genetics Center at the University of Miami.
  3. Assesses family history and counsels patients and/or families in cases of genetic disorders or birth defects; assists families to comprehend the diagnosis, probable course of the disorder, and available management strategies.
  4. Educates families to understand alternatives for dealing with risk of genetic disorders, choose the course of action they deem appropriate and act in accordance with that decision, and make the best possible adjustment to the disorder in an affected family member and/or to the risk of recurrence of that disorder.
  5. Interprets Genetics lab test results for physicians and families as needed.
  6. Documents patient charts and develops follow-up recommendations for patients; documents cases and maintains appropriate records, ensuring confidentiality.
  7. Assists residents, fellows, and medical students with the educational efforts of the department.

Research Coordinator - 25%

  1. Assists with the coordination and execution of research protocol as specific to the objectives of the individual position, to include recruitment and assessment of research subjects, provision of patient advice and support, and maintenance of research records.
  2. Performs associated administrative or clerical tasks, which may include special projects, correspondence, and program funding activities.
  3. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Ability to observe, assesses, and records symptoms, reactions, and progress.
  • Ability to effectively communicate medical information, test results, diagnoses and/or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood by the client.
  • Knowledge of human genetic disorders and birth defects.
  • Ability to educate patients and/or families as to the nature of disease and to provide instruction on proper care and treatment.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
  • Ability to counsel patients and/or families in life management and coping skills.
  • Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses.
  • Ability to apply mental health counseling methods and techniques.
  • Ability to supervise, advice, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of the principles and procedures of clinical research.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
  • Knowledge of community support services and funding agencies.

The Faculty Member in the Department of Human Genetics will be expected to fulfill the following role and functions:

The Chief of the Medical Genetics Division and Clinical Program Director will oversee the clinical operations of an ongoing Medical Genetics research group, manage clinical services, and promote clinical research.

He or she will be responsible for maintaining a high level of excellence in education, team-based research, and clinical programs, with the long-term goal of securing the growth potential of the Department of Human Genetics as it expands to provide academic and clinical services for a variety of projects. The candidate will work closely with members of the Miami Institute for Human Genomics in pursuit of these objectives.

The successful candidate will have a strong record of successful scholarly work, particularly in translational research, and will possess an MD or MD/PhD, a Florida medical license, and board certification in Clinical Genetics, Pediatrics, or Medicine/Pediatrics.

Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical Geneticist) non-tenure track.

The Faculty Member in the Department of Human Genetics will be expected to fulfill the following role and functions:

The Clinical Geneticist will be responsible for providing clinical genetics services in a variety of specialties and interface with diagnostic laboratories. The focus of practice will be pediatrics and adult patients with a variety of genetics conditions.

Responsibilities will also include educating fellows, residents, medical students, Allied Health professionals, and community groups. The Clinical Geneticist will be encouraged to conduct clinical research within the Department of Human Genetics, and will have the support of colleagues and facilities at the Miami Institute for Human Genomics.

The successful candidate will posses an MD or MD/PhD degree from an accredited university and be board-certified in Clinical Genetics. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong record of successful scholarly research.

Associate Professor (Director of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory), tenure track.

The Faculty Member in the Department of Human Genetics will be expected to fulfill the following role and functions:

Responsibilities will include the interpretation, reporting, and consultation of a spectrum of DNA diagnostic assays, the establishment of new testing protocols, and the performance of routine administrative duties in directing the general operations of the laboratory.

The Director of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory will be required to collaborate with other laboratory directors in a collegial and team-oriented atmosphere, and to contribute meaningfully to the teaching and research goals of the department.

The successful candidate will possess a PhD or MD degree, and will be certified by ABMG as a Clinical Molecular Geneticist.

Director of Bioinformatics, non-tenure track.

This is a research-track (non-tenure) faculty position responsible for operating, supporting, maintaining, developing, integrating, and deploying software that supports the scientific mission of the MIHG and the bioinformatics program jointly administered with the University of Miami Center for Computational Science (CCS).

The Director will oversee the work of colleagues in developing software and software-based tools, and the integration of open-source software from third parties. He or she will be responsible for developing and maintaining the algorithms, software, and IT technologies utilized by the MIHG, as well as evaluating new tools and techniques being considered for adoption. Other responsibilities include training and supervision of academic and technical personnel, maintaining equipment, and budget administration.

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Biology or Computer Science with significant professional expertise in relevant software, relational databases and SQL (Structured Query Language). He or she must be able to program in a UNIX environment, using C or C++ and PERL. Object-oriented languages such as JAVA and web skills including HTML are highly desirable. Excellent communication skills are essential. Salary and faculty rank will be commensurate with experience.

The Miami Institute for Human Genomics (MIHG) seeks applicants for tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level, depending on experience. The applicant should have an interest and experience in molecular biology and genetic studies, particularly as they apply to human disease gene mapping. Areas of emphasis include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Epigenetics
  • Genome technology
  • Functional Genomics

All applicants will be expected to incorporate new aspects of molecular genetics and genome technology that reflect state of the art research approaches into their research. A successful record of independent funding is highly desirable, but not required. A strong publication record and willingness to collaborate as part of a research team are essential. Each applicant must be willing to promote the mission of the MIHG and the Department of Human Genetics by maintaining a presence and leadership role at the national level.

Specific Description: Associate Director of the Center for Genome Technology A molecular scientist is being recruited in the tenure track for the position of "Associate Director of the Center for Genome Technology" at the Assistant professor level. In addition to the normal criteria outlined above the applicant will be expected to have experience in the application of state-of-the-art genome technology to human genetics. The Associate Director, under the Director, will be expected to help execute the mission of the program, to develop, to oversee, and to maintain the Center for Genome Technology of the MIHG and its five cores. The successful applicant will have a proven publication track record and a minimum of two years of post-doctoral research training.

Genetic Epidemiologist/Statistical Geneticist Faculty Position

The Miami Institute for Human Genomics (MIHG) seeks applicants for tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level, depending on experience. The applicant should have an interest and experience in quantitative aspects of genetic studies, particularly as they apply to human disease gene mapping. Areas of emphasis include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Quantitative trait analysis
  • Environmental genetics

In addition to an appropriate departmental appointment in the Miller School of Medicine, the selected individual will be part of the MIHG Center for Genetic Epidemiology and Statistical Genetics. The appointee will be supported through independent funding and collaborative efforts within the MIHG and UM. The position is primarily research-based. Responsibilities include applied or methodological research as well as mentoring students and junior faculty.

All applicants must have a doctoral degree in statistics, biostatistics, genetics or a related field, and a demonstrated interest in and commitment to research involving both statistical and biological sciences. Medical Geneticist/Research Assistant Professor of Medicine/Cardiology

A board eligible/board certified PhD in Medical Genetics specializing in molecular genetics is sought to support a cardiovascular molecular genetics laboratory at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine within the Division of Cardiology and the Department of Medicine in collaboration with the Miami Institute for Human Genomics. This position will be in support of a research program to identify and characterize the genetic basis of dilated cardiomyopathy. This will include establishing CLIA-compliant protocols for receipt, processing and testing of genetic samples in support of a research program in familial dilated cardiomyopathy. The candidate will assist with the design, characterization and implementation of high throughput resequencing of genes involved with genetic cardiomyopathies and other cardiovascular genetic diseases. Research Associate (Data Analyst in Genetic Epidemiology Core)

Position Description: The Research Associate will interact with laboratory and clinical personnel in the generation and management of genetic data, while functioning as a member of a multidisciplinary research/study team under the direction of the Analytic Project Manager(s) and Project PI's. Responsibilities and duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Efficiently preparing data, conducting statistical analysis and summarizing results for large research projects.
  • Preparing written reports to document and to summarize analytic activities.
  • Participating in the development and testing of efficient protocols for the collection, verification, management and analysis of large amounts of genotypic and phenotypic data
Qualifications: Applicants should possess a bachelor's degree in an area relevant to data analysis and/or biological research with four years genetic data analysis experience or a Master's degree. Examples include statistics, mathematics, computer science, biology, psychology, or other majors with a quantitative emphasis. Work experience, including an internship in a related field, is prerequisite. Additionally, applicants are expected to:
  • Work efficiently on both PC and Unix platforms.
  • Be familiar with data management and analysis software, including programs for human pedigree analysis, basic statistical software, and query-based extraction of clinical and laboratory data from a large relational database.
  • Adapt quickly to new software and analysis methods.
Familiarity with statistical software (SAS, S-plus, STATA) is desired, but not a requirement.

Research Associates

We are looking for qualified individuals to fill our requirements for Research Associates. The individual(s) will perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting physical, chemical, biological and other research laboratory tests and experiments to obtain data for research purposes.

Responsibility includes: Conferring with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments; make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular equipment as required.

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field plus two years of experience in various laboratory research techniques. An appropriate combination of relevant education, experience and/or certifications.
