Our Mission

One of the major focuses of HIHG is to identify genes involved in human diseases and explain the effects of genes in human health. We want to utilize genetic knowledge for the diagnosis, intervention and prevention of disease, thus developing new approaches to assist in gathering information critical to targeted patient care.

In recent years, the fields of genetics and genomics have grown rapidly compared to other areas of medicine. The current field of genetics extends far beyond traditionally recognized single-gene disorders such as Huntington Disease, Sickle Cell Anemia, and Cystic Fibrosis and includes complex common human diseases and disorders such as autism, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Understanding the complicated interactions of multi-gene disorders and environmental factors may provide the foundation for further development of genomic medicine. This may help lead to better targeted therapies for genetic disorders and diseases.
